Naples and Campania coach tours: itinerary ideas for groups

Naples is surrounded by some of Southern Italy's best-known landscapes and destinations. In just a few days, you can move from the historic centre to the ruins of Pompeii, head up towards Mount Vesuvius, reach the Amalfi Coast or the Royal Palace of Caserta and, with a few extra days, continue on to Matera and Puglia.

BusNapoli.it arranges coach hire with professional drivers for groups, tailoring the service to the trip you want to take: a day trip, a weekend away, a multi-stop tour or a multi-day itinerary.

We do not impose a fixed programme. The ideas on this page are some of the most interesting routes to plan from Naples, or as part of a wider tour that includes the city. Departure point, destinations, stops, overnight stays and return travel are defined around the group's needs.

Naples, a starting point for exploring Campania

Naples' location makes it possible to build very different itineraries without necessarily covering long distances. Pompeii and Herculaneum tell the story of the Vesuvius area through archaeology; Sorrento is the gateway to the peninsula and the Amalfi Coast; Caserta offers a window into the history of the Bourbon dynasty; central Naples offers a completely different experience through art, layers of history, traditions and food.

The programme naturally changes depending on the group. A school group heading to Pompeii, a group spending a day on the Amalfi Coast and a tour operator running a five-day tour all have very different requirements..

For this reason, even before choosing the vehicle, it is important to understand which stops to include and how much time to allow for each one.

Five tour ideas from Naples

The itineraries below are not pre-packaged tours. They are some of the most interesting combinations for groups that want to visit Naples and the surrounding area or use the city as a starting point for travelling to other regions.

Centro città di Napoli

NAPLES, FROM THE HISTORIC CENTRE TO THE SEAFRONT

SUGGESTED ITINERARY
Cathedral → Spaccanapoli → San Gregorio Armeno → Santa Chiara → Via Toledo → Piazza del Plebiscito → Seafront

Much of a visit to Naples is best experienced on foot, and that is precisely what allows you to take in the city's character. The historic centre follows the route of the ancient decumani and, within just a few kilometres, brings together churches, palaces, workshops, markets, pizzerias and traces of many different eras. Spaccanapoli and San Gregorio Armeno lead into the oldest heart of Naples; as you continue towards Via Toledo, the city changes character, reaching the monumental area around Piazza del Plebiscito and the seafront. For a one-day visit, it is best not to cram in too many indoor attractions. It is often more rewarding to choose a few places and leave time for the journey between one stop and the next. The programme can focus on culture or panoramic views, or devote more time to Neapolitan food traditions, with stops and free time throughout the day

POMPEII AND THE VESUVIUS AREA

POSSIBLE ITINERARIES
Naples → Pompeii → Naples / Naples → Pompeii → Vesuvius → Naples Naples → Herculaneum → Vesuvius → Naples

Pompeii is one of those destinations where careful day planning really matters. The archaeological site is extensive, and the length of the visit depends greatly on the group: a school group with a guide, a cultural association and an international group may follow completely different routes and timings. When the schedule allows, Pompeii can be combined with Mount Vesuvius; alternatively, Herculaneum offers another perspective on the AD 79 eruption and pairs well with a visit to the volcano. What I would avoid is turning the day into a rushed sequence of stops. Two well-planned destinations often allow you to understand the area much better than three or four visits squeezed into a few hours. Pompeii Archaeological Park manages admission and ticketing according to its own procedures, which should be factored into group timing.

Vesuvio
Positano

AMALFI COAST: CHOOSING THE RIGHT STOPS

SUGGESTED ITINERARY
Naples → Positano → Amalfi → Ravello → Naples

Positano, Amalfi and Ravello are the three places around which a first Amalfi Coast itinerary is most often built. But here more than anywhere else, the route on a map is not enough to estimate the actual journey time. The road layout, time of year, visitor numbers and time allowed for stops all have a direct impact on the schedule. In Positano, much of the experience revolves around heading down towards the town centre and the sea; Amalfi combines the history of the Maritime Republic with its Cathedral and town centre; Ravello offers a different experience, quieter and characterised by sweeping views. For a day trip from Naples, it often makes more sense to focus on a few places rather than trying to reach them all. With two or more days, the itinerary can include Sorrento, the Sorrento Peninsula or other coastal towns, allowing for a more relaxed pace.

CASERTA: THE ROYAL PALACE AND THE BOURBON HERITAGE

POSSIBLE ITINERARIES
Naples → Royal Palace of Caserta → possible visit to San Leucio or Casertavecchia → Naples

A visit to the Royal Palace of Caserta should not be treated as a quick stop along the way. The complex includes the Royal Palace, the vast park, the Waterway and the English Garden. The official website indicates around 2 hours 30 minutes for the Palace and around 4 hours for the Royal Park and English Garden, so planning the day depends heavily on what the group actually wants to visit. If time allows, the itinerary can continue to San Leucio, linked to the Bourbon dynasty’s industrial heritage, or to Casertavecchia. Alternatively, it is often better to devote the whole day to the Vanvitelli complex, especially when guided tours or activities for schools and organised groups are planned.

Reggia di Caserta
Matera

FROM NAPLES TO MATERA AND PUGLIA

SOME POSSIBLE COMBINATIONS
Naples → Matera → Alberobello → Itria Valley
Naples → Matera → Ostuni → Bari
Naples → Matera → Alberobello → Locorotondo → Polignano a Mare

When the trip lasts several days, Naples can become the starting point for a multi-day tour of Southern Italy. Matera is a natural first destination when heading east. From here, the tour can continue into Puglia, reaching Alberobello and its trulli, the towns of the Itria Valley, Ostuni or the coast between Polignano a Mare and Bari. This is no longer a simple excursion, but a touring itinerary: there are hotel changes, more luggage to manage, and travel times, stops and visits all need to be coordinated. It is precisely on itineraries of this kind that having one coordinated transport service throughout the tour makes group logistics much easier.

HAVE ANOTHER ITINERARY IN MIND?

Naples can also be combined with Cilento, the islands via ferry connections, Irpinia, Paestum or other destinations across Southern Italy. We start with the destinations your group is interested in and build the service around your actual programme.

From a single day to a multi-day tour

A day in Pompeii requires different planning from a weekend on the Amalfi Coast or a tour through Campania, Basilicata and Puglia. BusNapoli.it can support the group from arrival to departure, coordinating the different journeys included in the programme.

Aereo in volo

Transfers from the airport, port, station and hotel

The service can start from Naples Capodichino Airport, the Port of Naples, the station, the hotel or an agreed meeting point.

For those arriving by plane, the first transfer can become the actual starting point of the tour:

• airport → Naples
• airport → Pompeii
• airport → Amalfi Coast
• airport → hotel, continuing the tour over the following days.

The programme can be combined with the Bus&Bus airport transfer service. For groups arriving or departing by sea, transfers can be coordinated with the port and cruise transfer service.

Bagagli

Journey times, overnight stays and luggage

When a tour runs over several days, the logistics change.

You need to consider not only the distance between two cities, but also visit times, hotel check-in and check-out, luggage, the driver's required breaks and the next stops on the itinerary.

A Naples → Matera → Puglia tour therefore requires different planning from a same-day return trip.

Defining these aspects at the outset makes it possible to plan a more realistic itinerary and avoid constant changes along the way.

Positano

The Amalfi Coast requires specific planning

Among the itineraries proposed, the Amalfi Coast deserves particular attention.

The road passes through towns built between the mountains and the sea and has very different characteristics from a standard motorway route. Traffic and visitor numbers also increase during peak season.

For this reason, the number of places, pick-up and drop-off points and time spent at each stop should be assessed before departure, also taking into account current traffic regulations and the characteristics of the vehicle.

A good Amalfi Coast itinerary is not the one with the most names on the list, but the one that allows the group to genuinely enjoy the places chosen.

Trips for schools, associations, companies and tour operators

BusNapoli.it organises transport services for schools, tour groups, associations, parishes, employee leisure associations (CRAL), companies, travel agencies, tour operators and private groups.

For schools, timetables, pre-booked admission and transport between archaeological sites may be priorities. A tour operator may instead need a coach for several consecutive days, while a corporate group may combine visits, hotels, restaurants and events.

Vehicle capacity, luggage, duration and programme requirements are assessed together before the service is finalised.

For complex trips, multiple vehicles or departures from different points can also be coordinated.

One coordinated service for all your transport

A tour is not just the main journey. It can include an airport transfer, the transfer to the hotel, the next day's visits, an evening dinner, travel to another city and finally the return journey.

BusNapoli.it can coordinate all these journeys within the same programme, avoiding the need to organise each transfer separately.

If you have already defined the itinerary, we work around your plan. If you only have dates and destinations, we can work with you to define a sequence of stops that is realistic in terms of time and distance.

Frequently asked questions about tours from Naples

No. They are example tours that can be used as a starting point. Destinations, order of stops, departure point, duration and return journey can all be adapted to the group.

Yes. The coach can pick the group up directly from Naples Airport, the port, the station, the hotel or another agreed meeting point and take the group directly to the first destination.

It is possible to create itineraries that include both, but the actual time available needs to be assessed carefully. For groups that want to explore the ruins at a relaxed pace and spend time in the towns along the Coast, it may be better to split the programme over two days.

That depends on the season, departure point, stops and how long you want to spend in each place. In many cases, two or three well-planned stops are more realistic than an itinerary with numerous stops.

Yes. Multi-day itineraries can be organised throughout Campania and into other regions, including transfers between cities and hotels, with one coordinated transport service for the entire itinerary.
